I want to place some SVG images before some selected elements. I am using jQuery but that is irrelevant.

Add a space (“ ”) after an element using :after

That's not a problem. Simply add user-select:none; to the definition of the pseudo-element. That should work in all browsers except for a few Android ones that are quirky in this respect.

You still need size for <select multiple> to get the height to line up with the options properly. But I'd not use it on an <input>.
