Since I found some older posts, that tell that whatsapp doesn't support this, I was wondering if something had changed and if there is a way to open a whatsapp 'chat' with a number that I'm sending through an intent?

I'm assuming I can answer my own question....
This worked for me.
File -> Invalidate caches / Restart
Shutdown Android Studio
Rename/remove .gradle folder in the user home directory
Restart Android Studio let it download all the Gradle stuff it needs
Gradle build success !
Rebuild ...
GlobalConfiguration.Configure() not present after Web API 2 and .NET 4.5.1 migration
.... I had to restart VS2015 to get it going. I also did everything else recommended on this page so not sure what was the actual problem.
