Delete empty lines using sed
... spaces or tabs in your "empty" line. Use POSIX classes with sed to remove all lines containing only whitespace:
sed '/^[[:space:]]*$/d'
A shorter version that uses ERE, for example with gnu sed:
sed -r '/^\s*$/d'
