Turns out my problem was an issue with my JAVA_HOME environment variable. Yes, shocking I know. My initial setting for PATH and JAVA_HOME looked like this:
export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun
export PATH=$PATH:$JAVA_HOME/bin
And I added /jre so it now looks like ...
process.env.NODE_ENV is undefined
... I don't think I missed anything but whenever I call the process.env.NODE_ENV the only value I get back is undefined. According to my research the default value should be 'development'. How is this value dynamically set and where is it set initially?

When to use reinterpret_cast?
I am little confused with the applicability of reinterpret_cast vs static_cast . From what I have read the general rules are to use static cast when the types can be interpreted at compile time hence the word static . This is the cast the C++ compiler uses internally for implicit casts also.
