are faster than using SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS

What does collation mean?
... bit more? Particularly, would the straightforward query "SELECT word FROM test WHERE word LIKE 'nandu'" be able to do that? And which collation should i use to have it work? (Note that i'm concerned about diacritic marks, and not just accents...)
