What does collation mean?
...you use UTF8_GENERAL_CI collation:

As you can see, this collation (comparison rule) considers capital A and lowecase ä the same letter, ignoring case and diacritic differences.

...s, strlen() will be evaluated on each iteration. It's possible that, under ideal circumstances, the optimiser might be able to deduce that the value won't change, but I personally wouldn't rely on that.
