That rule was added in the 1999 version of the C standard. In C90, the status returned is undefined.
You can enable it by passing -std=c99 to gcc.
As a side note, interestingly 9 is returned because it's the return of printf which just wrote 9 characters.

...gcc-4.7 is broken (or my installation, which is an installation of gcc-4.7.0 on Ubuntu - and another installation which is gcc 4.7.1 on debian testing).
I will submit a bug report.. until then: DO NOT use std::unordered_map with gcc 4.7!
