Do HTML WebSockets maintain an open connection for each client? Does this scale?
...thing I've read it appears that every client will maintain an open line of communication with the server. I'm just wondering how that scales and how many open WebSocket connections a server can handle. Maybe leaving those connections open isn't a problem in reality, but it feels like it is.

Is there a way to get rid of accents and convert a whole string to regular letters?
...alize(string, Normalizer.Form.NFD);
// or Normalizer.Form.NFKD for a more "compatable" deconstruction

...t("1"). So if you can install gmpy, use that.
To answer a question in the comments, for bytes I'd use a lookup table. You can generate it at runtime:
counts = bytes(bin(x).count("1") for x in range(256)) # py2: use bytearray
Or just define it literally:
counts = (b'\x00\x01\x01\x02\x01\x02\x02...
