The heredoc syntax is much cleaner to me and it is really useful for multi-line strings and avoiding quoting issues. Back in the day I used to use them to construct SQL queries:
$sql = <<<SQL
select *
from $tablename

deny direct access to a folder and file by htaccess
...you can put a .htaccess file in that folder that contains just:
deny from all
That way you cannot open any file from that folder, but you can include them in php without any problems.
