Now when looking at the difference between toBe() and toEqual() when it comes to numbers, there shouldn't be any difference so long as your comparison is correct. 5 will always be equivalent to 5.

I know this is an old issue, I've come across it many times. The problem is that all of the fixes here are hacks that would potentially have unintended consequences.
First off, there's an easy explanation for the root problem....

Now this first increments j, and then adds i to the new value of j, resulting in 1 being alerted.
This could easily be solved by doing
var i = 0, j = 0;
alert((i++) +j);
Now this cannot be mistaken.
