Determine if a function exists in bash

It is more efficient to use if-return-return or if-else-return?

Note that Python supports a syntax that allows you to use only one return statement in your case:

git log --oneline $(git describe --tags --abbrev=0 @^)..@
Note that @ is short for HEAD.
