Rails: How does the respond_to block work?

The Responder does NOT contain a method for .html or .json, but we call these methods anyways! This part threw me for a loop.
Ruby has a feature called method_missing. If you call a method that doesn't exist (like json or html), Ruby calls the method_missing method instead.

The solution for Rails 3:
Add:
skip_before_filter :verify_authenticity_token

Rails 4: before_filter vs. before_action
...ller::Base, before_action is just a new syntax for before_filter.
However all before_filters syntax are deprecated in Rails 5.0 and will be removed in Rails 5.1
