Is gcc's __attribute__((packed)) / #pragma pack unsafe?
...on't yet have the full details of this, but using __builtin_assume_aligned(ptr, align) seems to get gcc to generate the correct code. When I a more concise answer (and hopefully a bug report) I'll update my answer.
