What is the difference between map and flatMap and a good use case for each?
...es0: Array[String] = Array("Roses are red", "Violets are blue")
Now, map transforms an RDD of length N into another RDD of length N.
For example, it maps from two lines into two line-lengths:
rdd.map(_.length).collect
res1: Array[Int] = Array(13, 16)
But flatMap (loosely speaking) transfo...

In comments Steve Jessop mentioned 'maps to' in the case of transformations - so taking Anders' example:
x => x * 2;
would read
x maps to x times 2.
That does seem much closer to the actual intention of the code than 'becomes' for this case.

How do I calculate the normal vector of a line segment?

The matrix representation of the general 2D transformation looks like this:
x' = x cos(t) - y sin(t)
y' = x sin(t) + y cos(t)
where (x,y) are the components of the original vector and (x', y') are the transformed components.
If t = 90 degrees, then cos(90) = 0 and ...
